Checkpoints

Many maps will have checkpoints, which will be displayed on the map at key locations. Checkpoints are typically numbered or abbreviated, with this displayed within the marker. Where they have a longer name, this will often be shown in full on the leaderboard.

Unless otherwise stated, checkpoint detection is usually based on proximity, triggering an automatic detection when the participant’s tracker is within a certain radius. This generates a timestamp, which will be visible on the Leaderboard and in the Details menu.

Custom Checkpoint Icons

Our maps all have the ability to load custom checkpoint icons, so you may see maps where the checkpoints appear very different, using branded icons or with longer floating titles. These behave in exactly the same way and are just aesthetic changes – usually at the request of the event organiser.

Checkpoint Pop-ups

In 2025, we enabled checkpoint pop-ups, which appear when the checkpoint is clicked upon. These appear next to the checkpoint and can contain text, images or links. The content within them is provided by the event organiser, so not all events will choose to use them. To close the pop-up, simply click on the “x” in the top right corner.
